B Ride
Alto Velo's B Ride peloton consists of former riders who have retired from racing, up-and-coming riders who enjoy a challenge and strong riders who enjoy camaraderie. Based on the principle of getting outdoors and seeing and doing some cool things, this ride is meant to be challenging but doable. Mostly a no-drop ride, we average 50 miles per ride.
Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:10am. New riders welcome!
Pace: Moderate and sometimes fast. If you're at the front early on, know the route and please look back to see that the group is together (three souls gasping for air is not considered a group). Paceline when possible, wait at the top of longer climbs
Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb
Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/4519225
The B Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.
See below for details of the upcoming ride as well as past rides.

AV-B Ride Mar 1 ‘25: Lobitos Lollipop
AVBers,
Welcome to March! This Saturday we will make our way to Lobitos via Kings and Tunitas.
First we will warm up as a group (yes, what a crazy idea) as we head to the first and short regroup at the corner of Portola & Alpine. Then we’ll ride through Huddart Park to go up Kings at your own pace, regrouping at the top of Skyline before we all safely descend Tunitas and head towards Lobitos. Finally a stop at Bike Hut before going back up Tunitas, down Kings, through Woodside, and back to Summit.
It’s my first time leading, so no clowning around and let’s not drop your ride leader!

AV-B Ride Feb 15 ’25 - Mora — Montebello — RWG
AVBers,
Hey Friends, looks like it will be dry this weekend so lets remember the warmer months with a classic Egan climb, Mora, and a classic LKHC climb, Montebello, and then finishing with a quick Redwood Gulch. We will regroup at the top of the climbs and then a couple other places for water. Specifically there is water in the parking lot after we come down Mora, At Canyon Trailhead before the start of Redwood Gulch, then in Saratoga and at McClellan Ranch on the way home.
Also, I want to reiterate some ride rules that I’ve seen ignored recently:
Ride on the right side of the road. When there are double yellow lines, stay to the right side of the them, when there is no line, try to stay to the right as best as possible, in case of on coming traffic. When we are on busier roads, lets try to stay 2 by 2 and be good road users.
NO HEADPHONES ALLOWED! It is critical that we be able to hear each other and communicate clearly. If you have headphones on, I don’t know if you can hear me and I don’t trust that I can get your attention when I need it. If you want to listen to music while you ride, go on your own ride, don’t be in a group where you can endanger other people

AV-B Ride Feb 8 ’25 - A few "short" climbs
AVBers,
The weather looks promising for Saturday, but just in case it takes a turn for the worse, I’ve planned a route that stays this side of the hills with plenty of bail-out options. The climbs are shorter (well, except for OLH), but that just means we get to tackle more of them!
We’ll be hitting Taaffe, Alpine & Joaquin, Westridge, Old La Honda, and winding through the Emerald Hills. There are a few twists and turns along the way, so make sure to load the route beforehand.
Hope to see you there!

AV-B Ride Jan 18 ’25 - Los Swetty Kings
AVBers,
We’ve got something for everyone in this route, starting with a couple of short climbs in Los Altos for the puncheurs, Kings Mountain for the climbers, then Skyline and Cañada for the time trialists. This week, let’s focus on maintaining a smooth 2x2 paceline on the flats - as much fun as it is to surge every bump in the road it’s easier to keep the group together with a steady pace. As usual, we’ll regroup after climbs (so feel free to go as hard as you want on those) and finish at Backyard Brew for post-ride coffee.
Hope to see you there!

AVBers,
It looks like we’re in for a sunny Saturday, so let’s make the most of it! To celebrate the gorgeous weather—and my new bike!—we’ll take the scenic route to Saratoga, going via Old La Honda, West Alpine, and Highway 9. We’ll regroup at the top and bottom of the climbs, with a final water stop at Blaney Plaza in Saratoga before making a B-line along Foothill back to Backyard Brew.

AV-B Ride Jan 4: A Montebello New Year
Happy New Year!
We are throwing it back to my first AV-B ride and returning to Montebello. This time, the whole road is open and will not feature a 23% gravel section. We will start by going down Foothill and warming up with an out-and-back through the beautiful Stevens Canyon Road. We’ll then stop for water/bathrooms at the usual Canyon picnic area before tackling Montebello. Pace will of course be reasonable but you are welcome to smash the climb if you’d like. After a regroup at the top, we will cautiously descend the likely damp pavement before meandering home through Rancho San Antonio and Los Altos. This route hopefully has something new for everyone. See you there!
Strava: https://www.strava.com/routes/3309995864286427138 - 53 miles, 5,000ft
We’ll start at Summit Bicycles and end at Backyard Brew.
We’ll regroup at the gate at the top of Stevens Canyon Road, then have a water/bathroom stop at Canyon Picnic Area. Next regroup will be at the top of Montebello. The descent will separate the group, so we can turn right off of Montebello and meet 500m down the road at Lakeshore Picnic Area for a final regroup & water top-off before heading back through Rancho San Antonio and Los Altos.
Meet at 9, leave 9:10

AV-B Ride Dec 28 - Not Lexington Reservoir
AVBers,
Please note: I updated the route, given the valid concerns regarding the conditions of Los Gatos Creek Trail.
After stopping at Castle Rock Park for water, we will U-turn and ride on HWY-35 all the way until Skylonda, to descend via 84.
I will keep an endurance pace with fewer stops, as it should be at this time of the year. You are free to go as fast as you like on the hills, as long as you wait at the top for the rest of the group.
As usual, be safe and enjoy the ride!

AV-B Ride Dec 21 - OLH/West Alpine
Hi riders,
For tomorrow’s AV-B ride, we will do a classic route going up OLH to Skylonda and returning via West Alpine and Page Mill/Moody. If you’re feeling good on the C ride and wanting to try out a B ride but have been scared off by the miles and daunting elevation numbers, this is the ride for you! Come burn off some calories in preparation for the pizza party winter banquet later that night :)
The weather forecast is currently showing some 7am rain showers but it looks not as cold as usual. Dress in layers so you don’t freeze on the descents! And please be extra cautious on the wet descents…

AV-B Ride SUNDAY Dec 15: OLH + Kings + Cañada
Hi AV B-riders,
According to my very accurate weather forecast, there will be a lot of rain on the peninsula this Saturday.
However, the sun will shine the following day, so I'm gonna be leading an AVB ride on Sunday.
The route includes 2 of our favorite climbs (OLH and Kings) + a stretch on Cañada rd
I’ll be keeping a consistent endurance pace, because it’s Sunday and I am usually lazy on Sundays.
PS. For those who cannot make it on Sunday, the C-ride is still going on on Saturday (rain route) and Matt’s also leading a Zwift ride.

Hi AV B-riders,
This week we’ll be making the journey to Higgins and back via Kings and Tunitas, so be sure to have your climbing legs ready! The weather looks ok rain-wise, but it’ll probably be chilly around Skyline and the coast so I’d recommend layers.
