B Ride

Alto Velo's B Ride peloton consists of former riders who have retired from racing, up-and-coming riders who enjoy a challenge and strong riders who enjoy camaraderie. Based on the principle of getting outdoors and seeing and doing some cool things, this ride is meant to be challenging but doable. Mostly a no-drop ride, we average 50 miles per ride.

Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:10am. New riders welcome!

Pace: Moderate and sometimes fast. If you're at the front early on, know the route and please look back to see that the group is together (three souls gasping for air is not considered a group). Paceline when possible, wait at the top of longer climbs

Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb

Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/4519225

The B Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.

See below for details of the upcoming ride as well as past rides.

6/25/22 - Pesky RR Loop and other options

Peloton,

Please take a close look at the note as there are some significant changes: Ride Start Location / End and 3 Loop Options.

We are only doing the Pesky Loop 1x per year as it is rather long. However, as a celebration of our successful race and giving back to our members, we will enjoy one loop of the course. I will not be taking it at race pace but rather party pace. Each rider is willing to see if they can break the KOM / QOM established on Haskins or Stage (2 climbs) but we will regroup at top of Haskins and at Stage / 84. We will see if we have enough takers and if we don’t then we can all head up West Alpine.

Start / End Location

Ada’s Cafe - Ada’s is a new sponsor this year, and one of the ways we are giving back to the community. Ada’s is a Palo Alto nonprofit established in 2008 to hire and train people with disabilities in a commercial food-service environment. Additionally, it is a woman’s owned business.

Routes

Pesky - 72.5 mi, 5890 ft

West Alpine - 53.9 mi, 5087 ft

West Alpine / Page Mill - 45.1 mi, 4546 ft

Time

Meet: 9 AM

Leave: 9:10 AM

Non-Members

Alto Velo welcomes non-members to join us on our rides. However, non-members must have a Waiver on file with the club. Because of COVID, there are now multiple forms that must be completed. Blank forms may be found on our website at: https://www.bikereg.com/alto-velo-guest-waiver

Filling out the waiver is only required one time per year.

Ride Etiquette

  • Introduce yourself to new riders. If you're a new rider, introduce yourself at the start of the ride.

  • Roll out from the start/regroups gently so everyone has a chance to warm up and get going.

  • Use hand signals and call out turns, stops and road obstructions. Repeat the message through the group.

  • Mechanicals: relay the message to the front. Help out the victim. Wait for the victim at the next regroup.

  • Ride paceline / 2x2 on the flats. Ride leader will initiate a rotating paceline when the group desires.

  • Follow behind the wheel in front to avoid the bunch spilling over the road.

  • If you leave a ride early, notify someone so the group doesn't think they lost you.

  • Ride safety:

  • Riders should carry Medical ID that contains your name and emergency contact information. Additional helpful information includes any medical history. Two IDs are preferable.

  • Riders are discouraged from riding with AV groups if they don't wear a helmet.

  • Riders are always responsible for their own safety.  If you feel uncomfortable riding with the group, gently move to the rear of the group.

  • Look for yourself for cars and other road users, and OBEY TRAFFIC rules – you are responsible.

  • Do NOT cross the center line. You will be asked to leave the ride if you do so.

  • If you're new to group riding, make this known to the ride leader and ask for help.

  • Protect your front wheel, do not cross wheels.

  • Do not make sudden lateral movements at any time.

  • Be gentle on brakes so as not to suddenly stop in front of someone.

  • No Aero Bar use

6/11/22 - B Ride - Coastal Classic

Peloton,

I am out of town this weekend, and Jerry Leaugers has volunteered to lead. Please be respectful to his leadership.

Couple notes:

1) We will be doing the Coastal Classic a couple times in July as part of our 2022 Bike Hut Classic fundraiser. We are a contributing sponsor to this event, and are hoping to drive as much participation as possible.

2) Next Saturday, 6/18/22, will have NO B Ride. Every club member should be volunteering in some capacity for the Pesky RR and therefore be busy.

General comments:

  • Vaccination required

  • Non-Alto Velo Club members must complete the non-member waiver process below

  • First timers should review the etiquette & safety guidelines below

5/29/22 - B Ride - Steve Esswein Classic Modified

Peloton,

I am back. Kind of. Still not feeling it completely but we will give it a try.  I feel compelled to come back because of all the flats, mechanicals and an accident that occurred while I was gone.  Please, no more of that.

We can focus on etiquette again on this ride which means over communicate.  Talk about obstacles, point them out, don't overlap wheels and help out others.

On with the ride / route:

Alto Velo B Ride will meet at Lincoln Park in Los Altos Saturday at 9:00.

  • Vaccination required

  • Non-Alto Velo Club members must complete the non-member waiver process below
