C Ride
Alto Velo Saturday morning rides now start at Summit Bicycles on California Ave in Palo Alto.
Summit is Alto Velo's Sponsoring bike shop. Another big plus to the new start location, Terun, also a Alto Velo Sponsor, is just up the street with fabulous Italian food & attentive service.
On the C Ride (formerly known as the “Peet's Ride”) we enjoy a more moderate workout than the other Alto Velo rides (tho’ a workout it is). We practice group riding skills & communication in a supportive controlled paceline.
Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:15am, a few minutes after the B Ride departs
Pace: Double paceline when conditions allow, jamming as hard as you like on the climbs, sticking together otherwise. On most C Ride routes riders can skip the climbs, if desired, by waiting for the group at regroup points
Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb
Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2977827685383107158 (click here to see more)
The C Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.
New riders welcome!
If you’re a new rider or haven’t done a group ride before, there are many critical things that one needs to know about biking in general & about group biking in particular, some of them not so obvious. It's a good idea to learn these not-the-hard-way 😉.
Check out this blog post “How to avoid being that rider”: https://trainright.com/14-group-ride-etiquette-tips-avoid-guy-girl/
To improve your group riding skills, consider joining a skills clinic. Lorri Lown's road biking clinics have worked for many: https://savvybike.com/clinics-and-camps-new/
A simple bike fit might also make a huge difference to your comfort & safety on the bike. For instance, many riders don't feel comfortable riding “in the drops” of the handlebars. However, riding in the drops offers, by far, the most overall control & braking ease. Alto Velo sponsor Agile Physical Therapy offers bike fit assessments.
See below for details of the next ride as well as past rides.
Alto Velo B/C Ride May, 4 2024: Canceled
Hi Peloton
We held out as long as possible, but instead of getting better, the forecast has gotten worst for Saturday. I still can’t believe that there is only 1 day of rain forecast in 2 weeks and it is on a Saturday. Both the B & C Rides are canceled for this Saturday, 5/4/24.
Reminder
Saturday from 9am to 12 noon at 268 Castro St, Mountain View head to Dave Keefe, one of AV's longest standing sponsors, and his company Action Properties for some spring shredding and coffee! There will be secure document shredding by Shred Works and an espresso bar by Cafe Carello. RSVP HERE!

Alto Velo C Ride Mar - 23 - 24: Cat’s Hill
Hi Peloton
This weekend we are making a big push to support AVRT @ Cat’s Hill. Unfortunately, the weather doesn’t look like it going to be as good as the last week but we are holding out hope. The 8:30 am race has a couple of our participants, but starting later is when you will see the most AV riders. After the ride, we will have a tent on the course with snacks and refreshments. We hope you will hangout and support the team.
The plan is to start from Summit - Los Gatos at 9:30am and ride through Almaden Valley and New Almaden. I have ridden some of these road but not all of them, but I have check with some people so we should be good. We can think of it as a true exploration ride.

Hi Peloton
My creativity isn’t so great tonight, but I hope you will still enjoy it. I have taken part of the old Peet’s Ride and done it backwards, and also done some the normal way, and then added a few twists.
I have identified regroups and water / bathroom breaks on the route link. We have 4 planned regroups and 1 water stop. We can always add more.

Alto Velo C Ride Feb - 24 - 24: Modified Steve Esswein
Hi Peloton
For those of you newer to Alto Velo, we had a long time ride leader who frequently took us up OLH, and WOLH, Steve Esswein. Steve retired and moved to Bend, OR, but I have named this route in honor of him. This used to be the winter B Route on good weather days and now we are tackling it. It is only slightly different than a route we did a few weeks ago so we can definitely all do it.
I have identified regroups and water / bathroom breaks on the route link. We have 5 planned regroups and the last planned water is Sky Londa on stop #2 there.

Alto Velo C Ride Jan/13/24: Northern Rain Route
Hi Peloton
Forecast looks wet on Saturday so we will plan the Northern Rain Route. Either Simon or Ed will be leading. I will not be there if it is wet, but Simon has agreed to lead the ride regardless of weather.
Remember we have started 2024 and all riders must have a new waiver signed. If you are a member, you have completed this step. If you are just joining the ride, then you must sign the waiver from BikeReg.

Alto Velo B/C Ride Dec - 30 - 23: Rain Route
Hi Peloton
Rain is forecast for Saturday, and we are out all ride leaders except me :-0. As such, we will propose a B/C combo ride for tomorrow. It will be the Rain Route. It is a naturally shorter route (38 mi), but has lots of route variability if so chosen.
If it is wet, which it is supposed to be, don’t wait for me but rather head out at 9:15am. Self organize and be kind. Rubber side down.
** Look for a Cake and Coffee ride for Monday with better weather.

Alto Velo C Ride Dec - 23 - 23: Holiday Coffee Ride
Hi Peloton
Please read this section because it will tell you about Saturday’s special C Ride. If you remember, we did a coffee ride last year to celebrate the holidays and we will do it again.
We will have 2 leaders for tomorrow’s ride. John will be monitoring the front while Ed will be providing sweep.
We will stop at about mile 31 for coffee at Emerald Cafe in Emerald Hills. This coffee will be provided free courtesy of Alto Velo Bike Club.
After coffee, we have a flat ride back to Backyard Brew for another coffee and enjoyable discussions.
We are taking a couple newish roads to provide novelty and challenge.

Alto Velo C Ride Dec- 02 - 23: PV, Canada and Crestview
Hi Peloton
Saturday will we route ourselves through PV, starting as if we were the B Ride, and then head out Canada Rd. A right on Bunker Hill will take us over 280 and into a neighborhood that I once visited during the pandemic. We will head up Ralston to Crestview and go up Crestview in the easy direction. The high speed descent into Edgewood and a quick jaunt up Jefferson will take us back to Canada. We will finally head down Woodside, a slight detour through the old Folger Estate area and zooming home along Avenue of the Fleas.

* Update: Alto Velo C Ride Nov-11- 23: Return to Normal Start Location
Hi Peloton
I have received a note from the AV Board of Director that says we must start our C Ride from the Cal Ave. location of Summit Bikes. Therefore, we will keep the same route but leave from Summit at 9:15. We will take Bol Park Bike Path to get to Los Altos It will add about 4 flat miles onto the original proposed route. I apologize about the confusion.
Brief description
We are talking a route we have done before. We will head south out of Los Altos and proceed through Stevens Canyon and into Saratoga. We head south on Highway 9 and over Highway 17 to climb Shannon and Kennedy. We ride back to Los Gatos to pick up some water, and then head back to Los Altos and Peet’s for some warm or cold beverages, etc.

Alto Velo C Ride Sept -23 - 23: Deliverance, Montebello, Chaparral
Hi Peloton
I am quite proud of myself. I was able to create a explorative route after 4 days in Vegas for a conference. The AC has done me in so hopefully I can recover by Saturday.
Brief description
We will head south because PV is having a running race and so Alpine / Portola will be closed in the AM for a while. We will head through Steven’s Canyon and take on the shallow climb of Steven’s Canyon to the end. We will head back and then up 2 miles of Montebello to Montebello School. We turn around and have some rolling flat miles and then head up Moody until Chaparral. It starts paved and then turns to packed gravel. I have ridden it many times on my road bike so this part is very much the exploration part of the ride. We will then head down Black Mtn. and back to Summit.
*Please look at the route. Most is straight forward until Foothill College.

Alto Velo C Ride Aug-12: Mid-Pen Magical Mystery Tour
Hi Peloton
Wow - that was a tough century ride in Marin. However, beautiful people and scenery. This week I though a beautiful tour of the roads of the mid-pen would be in order. There are no long climbs but there will be a few steep ones. There are some loops to avoid if tired or whatever as we typically try to provide on the C Ride. This is our best AV ride to start with the club.
Also checkout our report of the Marin Century at https://www.altovelo.org/blog. It should be loaded later today. We are also promoting our Social Club and have started a new IG account https://www.instagram.com/altovelosocial/. As we finish up the summer month and transition into more social rides, we hope to have you join us and our rides that encourage connection and camaraderie.

Alto Velo C Ride June 10 2023
Hi Peloton
I thought we would head south this weekend. I struggled to find novelty and yet not make it too long, so I hope this loop works. There is an option to skip the last hill (Moody) and just meet back at coffee / tea. Major roads will be Foothill Expressway, Stevens Canyon, Mt. Eden, Pierce, Mt. Eden, Foothill, El Monte, Moody, Page Mill.
We will hopefully stay together until heading into Steven’s Canyon and then head up and stop at the end at the gate. We will then head back down Stevens Canyon Road up over Mt. Eden, Pierce and into Saratoga for a water break and the 2nd regroup. We will soft pedal the back streets of Saratoga until the base of Mt. Eden and then regroup at the reservoir dam parking lot. Next regroup will be at the top of Moody with the expectation we will stay together until Foothill College, and then we will head back via Page Mill.

Alto Velo C Ride May 20 2023
Hi Peloton
I can not be sure how I will feel on Saturday, but I will try to lead this ride. I am just 2 weeks back from 3.5 weeks of COVID and probably still playing catch up on my fitness. Additionally, I just found a crack on my crank and so I may be riding my heavy gravel bike (with slicks). Either way, it will be a go on one of my routes less ridden rides.
If you haven’t downloaded the ride, I recommend you do so. It is a very non-standard course but really beautiful.

Alto Velo C Ride Apr 8 2023
Hi Peloton
This week is an eclectic mix of short hills, roads less traveled and a Church. We are scheduled to leave through Stanford Uni, and ride in front on Memorial Church. This quick ride by on the way out and the way home will be our nod to the Easter Holiday weekend. We will head up Alpine and then take some backroads of Portola Valley. We will throw in the standard climb of Huddard, and after that some non-standard climbs like Canada College, Carmel-in-Woodside, and the westside of Emerald Hills. Those hills are a nod to last week’s Tour of Flanders and the upcoming spring classics with their short steep hills. As always, we will end back for tea and coffee.

AV C Ride for March 4 - Avoid the Rain Route
Hi Peloton,
After many looks at weather, it appears we are in for a wet weekend and specifically Saturday morning. At this moment, they are calling for a 86% chance of rain in Palo Alto at 10am, and 90% in Portola Valley with a Feels Like temperature of 41F. We have 2 options should the weather hold off, and I will post them below. As always, I will likely not show up if it is looking like rain or actively raining. I was there last week and it was great but the forecast was way better.
*** Finally, we are initiating 1st Saturday of the month post ride Coffee / Team Social after the ride. We will meet at Backyard Brew, and the club will pay for members coffee / tea. Another reason to be a member. If weather doesn’t cooperate we will push to next week. This is for both the B and C Rides.
