Egan Ride
Bored with structured training? Increase your fitness with hill intervals! Welcome to Egan, a fun, social yet competitive group of eclectic hill climbers. We charge steep uphills and banter during recovery. Each week is a new route featuring challenging short climbs in the beautiful hills of Silicon Valley.
Join the Egan Ride Club on Slack to stay informed about rides and chat with other Egan riders!
Start: Tuesdays 6:00pm during daylight saving time at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce, rolling at 6:05pm
Pace: Charge the hills, slow roll in between
Regroups: We regroup and recover after every climb; if you can climb Old La Honda in 25 minutes you should have no problem keeping up
Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2874856572963175602 (click here to see more)
The Egan Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.
Note: During the Egan off season, The Climbing Ride is held monthly on Sundays, starting at 9am at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. Slightly longer than Egan, it features crazy steep hills in places like Los Gatos, Emerald Hills, and Hillsborough. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "If you are going up hill, keep going".

Egan 2023.24 - Two by Four
Eganeers,
This week’s route is all about finding the middle ground after the big ring power of ‘Le Puncheur’ and the little ring grinding of ‘Moody Blues.’ We’ll do two sets of four intervals where each interval increases in length. Those that are able to balance the varied intensity will be rewarded with the best views of the sunset after the final segment.

Egan 2023.23 - Moody Blues
Egan Riders,
Got the Moody Blues? If last week’s ‘Le Puncheur’ big ring sprinters route got you down, then this week’s route is aimed to please all the endurance climbers in the group. Noting that last week there was only one segment over a minute, this week has only one segment under a minute. Don’t attack the beginning of each segment unless you enjoy and can endure that lactate acid buildup in your legs!

Egan 2023.21 - Top Performers
Rider of the day was Salvatore T. (for the second week in a row!) with PRs on all 9 segments. Gina Yuan took the woman’s GC with a commanding lead and Hannon Ayer took top spot for the men. And congrats to the all the riders who collectively garnered 362 PRs.
Egan 2023.21 had something for everyone — short steep climbs, long steep climbs and a few “easy” climbs. There were reports of much suffering on the Blandor/Olive Tree segment. Isn’t that the whole point of Egan? For those of you who didn’t suffer on that aforementioned climb, you weren’t trying hard enough 😀

Egan 2023.19 Top Performers
Rider of the day was Alex Obrand with PRs on all 10 segments, 4 Top 10’s and 3 QOMs (both Ravensbury segments as well as Emeraldhill Lane)! An additional shoutout to Gavin Hlady for snatching up the coveted KOM on Altamont with the help of an impressive lead out from the field.
We had yet another successful Egan in the hills of Los Altos Hills (isn’t that redundant?) with 3 separate groups: the women led by Robin Betz, a faster A group led by Tanner DeVoe, and an almost-as-fast B group led by Jerome and Akin.
This week’s results omit a couple of segments: “Mora Glen Drive climb maximus” and “Black Mtn Rd”. The first of these segments was skipped by Robin’s group due to a GPS routing error, and the second one was skipped by the B group because it was getting late. Kudos to anyone who may have gotten a KOM/QOM or Top 10 on these segments, but we’re sorry it doesn’t count towards the overall GC.

Egan 2023.09 Top Performers
Rider of the day was Ari Pascarella, with PRs on all 11 segments and a QOM on “Deerfield Drive up”! Ari also took the women’s GC while Eugene Chan took the men’s GC.
Ok, so that was probably the craziest Egan in history. First, let’s talk about the positives:
most # of women riders (13, judging from Robin’s picture)
most # of groups (3)
highest rider count (at least 91, according to the results app, which is an underestimate)
most # of PRs (at least 485, according to the results app)
zero crashes and injuries
zero NextDoor threads
With the growing popularity of Egan, the collective will meet tomorrow to discuss a revised format for the ride. Our objectives are simple:
Make a safe and fun ride for all levels
Accommodate our growth
Promote women’s cycling
Stay tuned for more info soon.

Egan 2023.07 Top Performers
Wow, that was an especially tough Egan ride with lots of great performances all around! We split the ride into 2 groups, and anecdotally, it seemed that Group 2 (birth months Jul-Dec) was a bit faster than Group 1 (Jan-Jun). Was this a random coincidence or statistical proof that birth month is correlated with athletic performance?
Notable observations: some riders took a wrong turn on the Anacapa segment, a pedestrian was prevented from crossing the road and there were reports of a few crossing double yellow lines. Please follow the prescribed route and group ride safety rules.
To all fast riders who get ahead of the leaders: check the route and tag the segments on Strava beforehand. That’s why we post the route on the mailing list, website and Egan Slack Channel. You most likely have a magical GPS device on your bars/stem that maps out the route and also notifies you when the segment starts and ends!
For all of you who are not members of Alto Velo and regularly attend the Egan ride, we invite and welcome you to join AV as reciprocal appreciation for all the hard work that the club does to organize these rides. Let’s keep the ride advertisement-free before we have to make a mid-ride stop for a timeshare sales pitch (LOL). It’s nearly cost neutral when you add up all the club benefits (sponsor discounts, picnics, pizza, banquets)!
Niky Taylor was rider of the day with PRs on all 12 segments, 7 top 10s, and a QOM on Coyote Hill! She was also tops in the women’s GC. On the men’s side, Yann Le Guen got top honors with George Wehner only 1 second behind. Honorable mention goes to Richard Red who posted a hilarious meme to his Strava feed (pic below).

Egan 2023.07
With the rainy weather behind us, Egan returns this week with a vengeance. This week’s route was designed by Steven Wu and features a variety of climbs along Page Mill. Since we’ll spend quite a bit of time on Page Mill, please respect the yellow line rule and pay attention to traffic.
As we planned to do last week, we’ll split the ride by Month of Birth:
First group: January through June
Second group: July through December

Eugene Chan was rider of the day with PRs on all 9 segments. Sam Schneider beat Eugene by 10 seconds to take the men’s GC and Yvonne Walbroehl took the women’s GC.
This week we had a more equal split between the 2 groups which resulted in a smooth and incident-free ride. Each group had its share of faster and slower riders. For future Egans we’ll come up with interesting ways to split the ride so you’re not always riding with the same group of people. As always, we welcome your ideas and feedback to keep the ride safe and fun.

Egan Ride 2023.05 — Mora!
For the 5th episode of Egan, we climb the hills of southern Los Altos Hills and end on the epic slopes of Mora in Rancho San Antonio park.
Because of Egan’s exploding popularity, and a desire to avoid being the subject of crazy people’s threads on Nextdoor, we’ll split the ride into 2 equal-sized groups leaving 5 minutes apart, then come together for the final climb up Mora.

Group 2: last name staring with M-Z

Newcomer Nikhil Sharma was rider of the day with PRs on all 8 segments, while Robin Betz (again!) and George Wehner got the women and men’s general classifications, respectively. Awesome job, Nikhil, Robin and George!
Egan 2022.03 was another sufferfest with a picture-perfect finish in Foothills Park! While there were no incidents on the ride, the large number of riders on some of the shorter segments resulted in some crossing the yellow line, which is a no-no. For the purposes of ride safety, we might have to split up future rides into multiple groups.

Whew, that was a scorcher! Thankfully the water break at Arastradero (and short gravel climb) kept us going for the 2nd half of the ride. Previous Egan ride leader Dirk Bergstrom took plenty of professional-quality photos us suffering on the ride. Below are a few of my favorites. Eganeers,
As the days get shorter, let’s make one more trip to the hills of Portola Valley. Based on our reconnaissance missions, the full route should take about 2 hours. It’s still probably a good idea to have some lights with you, just in case. See you Tuesday!
Egan Fan Alert! Don’t forget that Egan Riders and AVRT will be racing together as one team this Saturday at the University Road Race in Santa Cruz. It’s a hill climbing race perfectly suited for Egan riders. Join or cheer us up at UC Santa Cruz! We will go up and down this hill up to 15 times (ouch!). This hill is similar to the full Taaffe segment (similar gradient but 1/4 mile longer). We will need all your Egan love to survive this one! More info at https://www.bikereg.com/university-road-race. Egan 2022.18 Top Performers
William Hooper was rider of the day with 14 PRs and a top 10 on the creatively named segment “Tough Wee Climb” (Vineyard/Redwood in Los Altos). Kristin Hepworth and George Wehner earned the top women’s and men’s GC respectively. Steven Wu bagged another couple of KOMs, on Whitham Ave and the aforementioned Tough Wee Climb.
Thanks to Greg Finley for putting together a fiendishly brutal Egan ride! Featuring 4 new climbs, lots of short punchy segments at the beginning, and several longer ones at the end, this ride had something for everyone. Personally, I’d rank this among the toughest Egans so far this year (regrettably, I had to skip the final Blandor/Olive Tree segment due to some rib pain).

Rider of the day was Niky Taylor who had 11 PRs and 4 top 10s! Other notable performances included Greg McCullough with the top men’s GC and Steven Wu who got the KOM on Wildcrest.
Although last night’s ride was shorter than previous Egan rides it was quite a bit faster, with another perfect photo finish at the Foothills Park vista point. Thanks to Mike Kato for designing the route and to Greg for leading the ride (since Mike wasn’t able to make it).
