Egan Ride
The 2024 Egan season is over! Mark your calendars for the 2025 season: Tuesday, March 11th, 2025
The Climbing Ride: During the Egan off season, The Climbing Ride is held monthly on Sundays, starting at 9am at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. Slightly longer than Egan, it features crazy steep hills in places like Los Gatos, Emerald Hills, and Hillsborough. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "If you are going up hill, keep going".
Bored with structured training? Increase your fitness with hill intervals! Welcome to Egan, a fun, social yet competitive group of eclectic hill climbers. We charge steep uphills and banter during recovery. Each week is a new route featuring challenging short climbs in the beautiful hills of Silicon Valley.
Join the Egan Ride Club on Slack to stay informed about rides and chat with other Egan riders!
Start: Tuesdays 6:00pm during daylight saving time at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce, rolling at 6:05pm
Pace: Charge the hills, slow roll in between
Regroups: We regroup and recover after every climb; if you can climb Old La Honda in 25 minutes you should have no problem keeping up
Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2874856572963175602 (click here to see more)
The Egan Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.

Egan 2024.13 - Top Performers
The last bit of Lindy was definitely a challenge for everyone, except perhaps its new queen and our Rider of the Day Jen Tavé who obtained PRs on all 9 segments, FIVE XOMs, and top 10s on the other four. Are any segments safe from Jen’s dominance? Greg McCullough was fastest in the men’s GC with 8 PRs and 2 cups.
The heat didn’t deter at least 73 Egan riders from a southerly adventure featuring some of the most notorious short climbs near Cupertino. The women’s group had great turnout too! Egan women’s group is at minimum the first ride of every month - join us!

Egan 2024.13 - Cupertino
We’ll enjoy this week’s warm weather and venture south into Cupertino. We’ll visit a few familiar hills along the way, passing through Rancho San Antonio on our way to the triple trouble of Regnart, Rainbow’s End, and Lindy. Save something for the last bit of the hill, you’ll definitely need it! Bring lots of water and a wind jacket for the journey back to State of Mind.
To keep the groups well-spaced, please note the following roll times:
A group: roll 6:05
B group: roll 6:08
Womens’ group led by Robin: roll 6:10 (bring a light for the ride home)
Route notes:
On the Loyola segment, keep right onto Berkshire!
Watch out for speed bumps at RSA. Be cautious and point them out to the riders behind you.
Obey the stop light on Regnart - there can be oncoming traffic.
This is a TWO water bottle ride. Please hydrate accordingly since it is a long ride.
When you think “Lindy” is over, it is not! Turn left into trailhead and enjoy the complimentary 26% gradient.

Egan 2024.12 - Top Performers
For the 3rd week in a row, Jen Tavé was rider of the day with PRs on all 8 segments, 6 top 10s, and 2 QOMs! Her QOMs were on the Ramona and the initial Vista Verde segments! Jen also took top honors for the women’s GC, while Qüinn Felton got the top spot for the men with 7 PRs and a KOM on Nasty Los Trancos Driveway!
Turnout was a bit lower for this week’s Egan compared to previous weeks. Perhaps some people stayed away because of their fear of the mighty Los Trancos staircase? If so, they missed out on some high quality suffering.

Egan 2024.11 - Top Performers
I, for one, wonder just how many seasons we will see of this 3 Body Problem! This installment started out strong with 6 segments in just 5 miles and just about 900 ft. before continuing on to two segments that made their Egan debut. Let’s be sure to thank Jerome for this absolutely brutal start! 72 riders made it on the leaderboards this week, missing those with private or incomplete rides.
Jen Tavé was once again rider of the day with 10 out of 12 PRs, 4 XOMs, and 5 other top 10s! Jen Tavé also took top honors for the women’s GC, while Justin Peck got the top spot for the men with 12 out of 12 PRs and 5 top 10s!

Thank you all for a fun and safe ride on Tuesday (and for humoring me with yet another Blandor)! This week we got to visit some of our old friends near Ravensbury, cramming in 2600ft of climbing in just 17 miles. We had a total of 74 riders on the leaderboards (and probably many more who skipped some segments or kept their rides private).

Egan 2024.10 - Ravensbury Side Quests
This Tuesday is the 10th installment of Egan for the year! By some coincidence we had a strong interest in segments on and around Ravensbury for this week, resulting in a ride of less traveled side quests. While there will be shorter travels between segments it also means less rest so keep pacing in mind as we get to the bulk of it. And would it be an Egan ride in that area without at least one trip up Blandor? Remember that the AV Photo Contest will be running through July 4 so keep your eye out for great photo opportunities!

Egan 2024.09 - Top Performers
Scott W was rider of the day with PRs on all 12 segments and a top 10 on Aric Lane. Rachel Hwang took top honors for the women with 2 QOMs, while Grant Miller got the top spot for the men, beating Yann by 1 second. Aric Lane served up some serious results for the sprinters, so you all owe me a big Thank You for including it in the route.
Another reminder that safety is our priority and there are no PRs on downhills! Let’s take it easy on the way home and pay special attention to your speed, surroundings and road hazards. Hitting a bump with speed hurts! Now on with the results…
What a wonderful way to spend a Tuesday evening! This week we kept the ride local, but added a few more segments to get us to 2,581 ft. of climbing. We had a total of 85 riders on the leaderboards (and probably many more who skipped some segments or kept their rides private).

Egan 2024.09 - Women’s Group
For the first Tuesday of the month tomorrow, Gina will also lead a women’s group. She will attempt to have some intel on all the segments but definitely will enforce a very chill pace in between. If you can make it up Moody twice without stopping and are comfortable riding with others, you can keep up with this group! Please bring lights and a layer for the ride home as we will finish around sunset. Roll 6:10 (see original announcement for ride details).
Egan 2024.09 - Palo Alto Hills
We are finally hitting some of my favorite segments in the small section of town, known only by a few, called Palo Alto Hills. This small oasis of land falls under the city of Palo Alto's jurisdiction, is exclusively accessible via a single road in-and-out (Alexis Drive), and is home to the only country club in the city. Do you have what it takes to become a member of this exclusive club where only KOM title holders are granted free passage? This is where we will make our final destination for the 9th episode of Egan 2024! Remember that the AV Photo Contest will be running through July 4 so keep your phone handy for snapshots up the grueling top of Alexis!

Egan 2024.08 - Top Performers
Yann . was rider of the day with PRs on all 7 segments and 3 top 10s. Robin Betz took top honors for the women while Matthew . got the top spot for the men, beating Yann by 25 seconds. There were also 2 QOMs: Gina Yuan on Liddicoat+Stanford and Robin on Golden Oak Sausal to Top.
As always, Golden Oak Egan is popular because who doesn’t love climbing both sides of that monster? We had a total of 84 riders on the leaderboards (and probably many more who skipped some segments or kept their rides private). A surprising number of people decided to ride the gravel through Arastradero back to Los Altos…perhaps we can call this the first “Dirty” Egan?

Egan 2024.08 - Golden Oak Duo
It’s that time of year when Golden Oak beckons. As is the Egan tradition, we will be doing both sides of Golden Oak as well as several adjacent climbs like Minoca and Hillbrook. We’ll end the ride at the top of picturesque John Marthens Lane, after which you’re encouraged to ride the gravel through Arastradero Park back to Los Altos (if you’re not comfortable riding gravel on a road bike, you can simply head back on paved Arastradero Rd, but it will be 50% less fun).
Notes:
It’s strongly advised that you go down Minoca in the smallest gear because the right turn onto Golden Oak will otherwise explode your rear derailleur and/or cause your legs to seize up.
The same is true for the descent on Sausal Dr and the left turn onto Golden Oak.
This is a good reason to familiarize yourself with the route and better yet, load the route onto your GPS device!
Also, a reminder that the AV Photo Contest will be running through July 4. Details

Continuing in both of their leaderboard domination, Jen Tavé was rider of the day and women’s GC leader with 8 PRs, 5 top 10s and 3 (!) QOMs while top GC honors for the men went to Matthew.
Can you believe that we’re already a quarter of the way through our Egan season? Good thing we checked off some neighborhood climbs last night to prepare us for the upcoming longer days and longer rides through the summer.
Approaching the summer also means that attendance will continue to grow so we ask everyone to be extra thoughtful about riding safely and predictably. As a reminder, aero bars are not permitted so please remove them before the start of the ride.
Getting into the fun stuff: shoutout to Christophe Testi for another glamorous photoshoot! You can find the latest photos here and leave a review here. As a reminder, the AV Photo Contest will be running through July 4.

Egan 2024.06 - Top Performers
Last Tuesday's Egan Ride was quite a celestial adventure! The fearless riders took on the challenge across 13 segments, with Dirk leading the charge after returning from celestial retirement. Utilizing every sun ray available, the riders conquered the gravitational problem, although the B group had to skip Saddle Stirrup due to timing constraints (this is why Saddle Stirrup is excluded from the ride results). And congratulations to Christophe Testi for winning the 3 body contest!

The Egan’s 3 Body Problem by Christophe Testi
Egan 2024.06 - The Egan’s 3 Body Problem
Egan riders! Get ready to tackle the Egan's 3 Body Problem route on Tuesday's hill climbing! This route will test your mettle for 32km of ups, downs, and enough elevation gain to make your legs question their life choices.
Inspired by the mind-boggling complexity of the 3 body problem, this route will have you feeling like you're navigating a cosmic dance of gravitational forces, with chaotic and stable areas challenging your cycling skills. Remember, just like those poor celestial bodies, hydration is key! Nobody wants to end up feeling like a dried-up yoga mat by the end of the ride.
For those who haven't indulged in the mind-bending saga of "The Three-Body Problem" series, do yourself a favor and check it out on Netflix or pick up the books. You'll thank us later for the cosmic inspiration!
In the spirit of intergalactic exploration (or at least neighborhood exploration), we challenge you to spice up your Strava profiles and IG post with themes inspired by the 3 body problem. Let's see who can come up with the most out-of-this-world script and profile picture! The winners will be featured on the Performance Report.

Egan 2024.05 - Safety is our top priority
Last Tuesday night's Egan was a blast! With a fantastic group of hill climbers, perfect weather, and an exciting climbing route, it was an unforgettable experience. However, amidst all the fun, safety remains our top priority during our weekly climbs. Our leaders are dedicated to ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone. It's crucial to follow their instructions at all times, both during climbs and descents:
Do not pass ride leaders while descending.
Familiarize yourself with the route and segments beforehand.
Do not cross the double yellow line.
Do not block the road. Move to the far right if sandbagging a segment. Additionally, refrain from blocking the lane for faster riders and pass while keeping to the right.
Bring lights, just in case the ride ends after sunset and you need to ride in the dark.
Check your bike brakes, tires and groupset. If your bike is not fully operational and ready to handle the demanding hill climb sprints, please keep it in your garage.
It’s everyone’s responsibility to make safety a top priority while we continue to enjoy our climbs together!
Jen Tavé was rider of the day with 7 PRs, 6 top 10s, and a QOM on Conception! She also took the top spot in the women’s GC, ending Rachel Hwang’s 4-week winning streak! For the men, Matthew took top honors.
The women's group had 11 riders! Tell your friends, let's see if we can get even more turnout next time.

Egan Ride 2024.05 — Let’s get Moody
For the fifth episode of Egan, we will revisit a few familiar hills and then move on to some Egan classics - we’ll tackle the unrelenting steepness of Moody for the first time this year, followed by some steep segments off Page Mill.
Robin will lead a women’s group this week with secret intel on all the segments and a very chill pace in between. If you can make it up Moody twice without stopping and are comfortable riding with others, you can keep up with this group! Please bring lights and a layer for the ride home as we will finish around sunset.
To keep the groups well-spaced, please note the following roll times:

Egan 2024.04 - Top Performers
Rachel Hwang was rider of the day with PRs on all 9 segments, 5 top 10s and 3 QOMs (Hilltop Dr, Camino Hermosa and Oxford Dr)! And for the 4th week in a row she took top GC honors…can anyone stop her winning streak? For the men, top GC honors went to Matthew . Steven Wu had KOMs on Mora Glen Dr and Highlands Circle.
Simon says more heat and sweet pizza. Simon says I want Mora Egan. What Simon says, we oblige and Egan riders were out in force this week nearing triple digits again! With Tanner out again Group A was left in the hands of Mike and Jerome, a great opportunity to beat the blue jerseys up the hill! Balance in the two groups improved and we’ll continue to focus on balancing the groups the rest of the season.
