Egan Ride
Bored with structured training? Increase your fitness with hill intervals! Welcome to Egan, a fun, social yet competitive group of eclectic hill climbers. We charge steep uphills and banter during recovery. Each week is a new route featuring challenging short climbs in the beautiful hills of Silicon Valley.
Join the Egan Ride Club on Slack to stay informed about rides and chat with other Egan riders!
Start: Tuesdays 6:00pm during daylight saving time at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce, rolling at 6:05pm
Pace: Charge the hills, slow roll in between
Regroups: We regroup and recover after every climb; if you can climb Old La Honda in 25 minutes you should have no problem keeping up
Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2874856572963175602 (click here to see more)
The Egan Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.
Note: During the Egan off season, The Climbing Ride is held monthly on Sundays, starting at 9am at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. Slightly longer than Egan, it features crazy steep hills in places like Los Gatos, Emerald Hills, and Hillsborough. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "If you are going up hill, keep going".

Egan 2025.03 - Top Performers
Phillip Maier was rider of the day with PRs on all 8 segments. Jen Tavé took top spot in the women’s GC as well as a QOM on Boronda View Sprint, while Matthew ! was the GC crown holder for the men.
With 120 riders and 390 PRs, the 3rd Egan of 2025 proved to be 20% <insert your favorite comparative adjective> than last week. The summer-like weather was no doubt a factor in increased ride attendance, although the B group was a bit too large compared to the A. The Egan leadership needs your help next time making sure the groups are more evenly divided, so we can prevent situations where many riders are crowded into small spaces.

With 86 riders and 258 PRs, the 2025 Egan season started strong despite the cool and windy weather. Thanks to Mark Filer for providing popsicles at the top of Madonna Way! (Yes, these were in fact the same popsicles that Mark served for the Egan finalé last year, and he has assured me that his freezer is top quality).

With 119 riders, 363 PRs, and a variety of costumes, the Egan finalé for 2024 was a memorable experience. Thanks to Mark Filer for providing popsicles at the top of Madonna Way!
While Egan is officially over for 2024, don’t be sad because there’ll continue to be Eganesque rides through the fall/winter season, in particular Dirk’s Climbing Ride. Also stay tuned for more info on the end-of-season banquet to be held at the usual Egan watering hole, State of Mind in Los Altos.
Our women’s group has grown in popularity over the season and will be returning at least monthly next year. The leaders have a goal of growing this group even more, so you have all winter to get your female friends into cycling so that when next summer begins we can convince them that hills are fun.

Egan 2024.28 - Season Finale
Weep ye bitter tears, for the season of Eganing is coming to an end. This Tuesday we will be riding the traditional First and Last Route with Jerome’s favorite pop singer addition (Madonna!). It’s short, but that just means you can go harder on each segment; we expect to see many PRs and cups, and hopefully a few crowns. Your efforts could be rewarded with some tasty treats at the end, but only if you go full gas and have something crazy on you (like a panda helmet) or your bike (pink tassels)!

Egan 2024.27 (CORRECTED) - Egan GP
NOTE: the previous post had some issues with the route. This has the correct one
Tired of Akin’s painfully slow intervals from last week? Welcome to the first edition of the Egan GP! This Tuesday night, get ready for long, fast rolling intervals with a touch of unpredictability. We’re honoring "The Best Part of Purissima," a long-overlooked gem in Los Altos, with a stopover at Viscaino. Prepare for Dirk's complaints about the 2% incline over 1km, a true Egan-style rebellion against the norm. Enjoy, and happy fast rolling!
Warning: Be careful on the first segment with a sharp right turn into Miranda.

Egan 2024.26 - Top Performers
Jack Lund was rider of the day with PRs on 5 segments and a top 10 on Tanglewood Lane. Once again, Jen Tavé took the top GC spot for the women while Matin Massoudi took the GC crown for the men.
Maybe it was the “heat wave”, maybe it was the extended Labor Day weekend, but we had a less-than-average turnout for Egan 2024.26. Still, it was a fun and memorable ride with a picture perfect finish in Foothills Park just as the sun was setting. Remember, the end of the Egan 2024 season is slowly approaching, with only 2 more rides remaining ☹️ and the last official Egan scheduled for Sept 17th, followed by an informal Egan & banquet on Sept 24th.

Emeraldhill Lane. Who would’ve thought that a 0.08 mile segment would cause so much frustration? Several riders reported that Strava didn’t properly record the segment, either causing an inaccurate time or not identifying the segment at all in their ride data. As Egan éminence grise Dirk Bergstrom pointed out, Strava isn’t so good at dealing with short segments, and in fact no longer allows them to be created. More info here: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216918227-Optimizing-Segment-Creation-How-to-Create-Good-Segments#short
For this reason, we removed Emeraldhill Lane from the official results: https://route-viewer.vercel.app/results/egan-2024-22
For those of you who hammered up Emeraldhill (and most of you did) and didn’t face any GPS inaccuracy issues, here are the original results: https://route-viewer.vercel.app/results/egan-2024-22-orig. It should be noted that our own Robin Betz got the QOM!

Egan 2024.22
This week’s Egan route is untitled. Because I couldn’t think of a cool name. But that doesn’t mean the ride will be easy or uninteresting. From the shortest segment (Emerald Hill Lane @ 0.08 miles) to the longest (Altamont @ 1 mile), it will test your legs & lungs.

Egan 2024.13 - Cupertino
We’ll enjoy this week’s warm weather and venture south into Cupertino. We’ll visit a few familiar hills along the way, passing through Rancho San Antonio on our way to the triple trouble of Regnart, Rainbow’s End, and Lindy. Save something for the last bit of the hill, you’ll definitely need it! Bring lots of water and a wind jacket for the journey back to State of Mind.
To keep the groups well-spaced, please note the following roll times:
A group: roll 6:05
B group: roll 6:08
Womens’ group led by Robin: roll 6:10 (bring a light for the ride home)
Route notes:
On the Loyola segment, keep right onto Berkshire!
Watch out for speed bumps at RSA. Be cautious and point them out to the riders behind you.
Obey the stop light on Regnart - there can be oncoming traffic.
This is a TWO water bottle ride. Please hydrate accordingly since it is a long ride.
When you think “Lindy” is over, it is not! Turn left into trailhead and enjoy the complimentary 26% gradient.

What: The Egan Ride meets at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce parking lot every Tuesday at 6:00pm and leaves at 6:05. We regroup and recover after every climb; if you can do OLH in under 25 minutes you should have no problem keeping up. (Ladies - the women’s group goes a lot more chill in between hills. If you can do Moody twice at any pace without stopping, you’ll enjoy this group).
Where: Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. 321 University Ave, Los Altos, CA 94022
How: Remember, pace yourself appropriately, there's lots of hills to climb! Pay attention to traffic and don't hog the road. Riders are encouraged to wear garishly covered socks on the Egan Ride, and riders are discouraged from riding Egan if they wear conservative socks.

Egan 2024.12 - Top Performers
For the 3rd week in a row, Jen Tavé was rider of the day with PRs on all 8 segments, 6 top 10s, and 2 QOMs! Her QOMs were on the Ramona and the initial Vista Verde segments! Jen also took top honors for the women’s GC, while Qüinn Felton got the top spot for the men with 7 PRs and a KOM on Nasty Los Trancos Driveway!
Turnout was a bit lower for this week’s Egan compared to previous weeks. Perhaps some people stayed away because of their fear of the mighty Los Trancos staircase? If so, they missed out on some high quality suffering.

So far this year, Jen has been Egan rider of the day 6 times, far ahead of Rachel Hwang with 2. Is anyone up to the challenge of dethroning Jen?
As a reminder, the AV Photo Contest will be running through July 4, so there is still time to join the our growing list of impeccable shots (such as the ones featured below). Email best pics at photos@altovelo.org

Egan 2024.08 - Top Performers
Yann . was rider of the day with PRs on all 7 segments and 3 top 10s. Robin Betz took top honors for the women while Matthew . got the top spot for the men, beating Yann by 25 seconds. There were also 2 QOMs: Gina Yuan on Liddicoat+Stanford and Robin on Golden Oak Sausal to Top.
As always, Golden Oak Egan is popular because who doesn’t love climbing both sides of that monster? We had a total of 84 riders on the leaderboards (and probably many more who skipped some segments or kept their rides private). A surprising number of people decided to ride the gravel through Arastradero back to Los Altos…perhaps we can call this the first “Dirty” Egan?
Once again, big thanks to Christophe Testi for another photoshoot from the top of Golden Oak. You can find his latest photos here and leave a review here. As a reminder, the AV Photo Contest will be running through July 4.

Egan 2024.08 - Golden Oak Duo
It’s that time of year when Golden Oak beckons. As is the Egan tradition, we will be doing both sides of Golden Oak as well as several adjacent climbs like Minoca and Hillbrook. We’ll end the ride at the top of picturesque John Marthens Lane, after which you’re encouraged to ride the gravel through Arastradero Park back to Los Altos (if you’re not comfortable riding gravel on a road bike, you can simply head back on paved Arastradero Rd, but it will be 50% less fun).
Notes:
It’s strongly advised that you go down Minoca in the smallest gear because the right turn onto Golden Oak will otherwise explode your rear derailleur and/or cause your legs to seize up.
The same is true for the descent on Sausal Dr and the left turn onto Golden Oak.
This is a good reason to familiarize yourself with the route and better yet, load the route onto your GPS device!
Also, a reminder that the AV Photo Contest will be running through July 4. Details

Egan 2024.02 - Top Performers
Matin Massoudi was rider of the day with PRs on all 7 segments and a top 2 finish in the GC. For the women, top GC honors went to Rachel Hwang and to Yurko M for the men.
The second Egan of the year was popular, with over 100 riders crowding the prosperous streets and cul-de-sacs of Los Altos Hills. We don’t really have an exact count because some folks prefer to keep their Strava activities private, some might have skipped segments, and some might have had GPS drift errors…but according to results 87 people made it onto the leaderboards by completing all segments!

Special thanks to Jack Lund who served refreshing popsicles after the Tepa/Summit Wood segment and Christophe Testi from Creative Shots for the new kit photoshoot pre-ride! Please leave a review on Google for Christophe to show your appreciation!
Note: If you’re wondering how to show up in the results, here’s how it works:
Upload your ride that evening (the results are tabulated early Wednesday mornings)
In your privacy controls, make sure that everyone can see your activities (if you’re worried about privacy, Strava has other settings such as restricting your profile page to followers and map start/end point visibility)
You have to complete all segments to show up in the GC

Egan 2024.02 - 23% more climbing and a photoshoot
This is a reprise of a route created by Greg Finley back in 2022. With the same distance and segment count as last week but 23% more elevation gain, we’ll stay close to home to maximize the evening daylight.
AV photographer Christophe Testi will be doing a photoshoot before the start of the ride at 5:30pm. If you want to participate show up early and wear your Egan jersey!

2023 Egan Bonus & Banquet Recap
The 2023 Egan season officially came to a close with a banquet at SoM (State of Mind) in Los Altos. Beforehand, a small group rode the infamous and beloved “5 ways to the 4 corners” that is always guaranteed to induce hunger and a need for liquid refreshment afterwards.
Unofficial results: https://route-viewer.vercel.app/results/egan-2023-bonus
While we can’t wait until the 2024 Egan season begins (on March 12, 2024), we’re considering doing more “unofficial” Egan rides to tide us over the next 6 months. Stay tuned for future ride announcements.

Egan 2023.25 & 26 Top Performers
Rider of the day was Rachel Hwang with PRs on all 7 segments and top placement in the women’s GC. Gavin Hlady took top honors for the men.
The 2023 Egan finalé had 114 riders, some dressed in costume, racking up 365 PRs and respirating under smoky atmospheric conditions with AQI in the mid-100s. While the ride was short, it had a sweet ending with ice cream and popsicles served at the top of Madonna Way, thanks to Gina Yuan and Sue-Lin Holt!

Due to a technical glitch that messed up the results for Egan 2023.25 (more about that below), the results now include all riders, not just those who are in the Egan Strava club. Going forward, we’ll probably calculate the results in this way.

Egan 2023.25 Revised Results:
The results from Egan 2023.25 were missing a lot of riders, even if they were members of the Egan Strava club. The corrected results now include everyone who rode all segments that day. You can view the details in this Google Spreadsheet.
