2024 Egan End of Season Banquet and Bonus Pre-Party Ride

Well here it is folks, the official end of the Egan 2024 season. This year we’ll celebrate the same as last year by doing a short and sweet pre-party ride, then head to State of Mind (SOM) for some real heat and sweet pizza. The route should take about an hour, so we’ll plan on starting the banquet by 6:30PM. Feel free to join the ride or just show up at SOM for the banquet and start squatting at the tables in the parking lot. We can’t make reservations so we need to start occupying the tables as we arrive.

Egan 2024.25 - Top Performers

What a great way to celebrate the end of Summer with a splash down at Jack’s at the end of the last segment. Who could turn down a slice of heat & sweet pizza after a hot & steep Egan ride! Laura Formosa was rider of the day again with PRs on all 13 segments and 4 top 10s. Jen Tavé took the top GC spot for the women with 9 PRs and 9 top 10s while Matin Massoudi took the GC crown for the men with 9 PRs and 2 top 10s!

A bientôt Sue Lin! Sue Lin has been an outstanding board member, racer and Egan rider for the Alto Velo race team and Egan community. We will always keep fond memories of her girls distributing ice cream during the last Egan rides of past seasons. We wish her a smooth transition to SoCal. Thanks Bernard van Táp for the popsicles at the top of La Cresta as we bid farewell to Sue Lin.

• The temperature was mild and the pace was fierce.

• Several riders enjoyed the collection of traditional Egan segments. This means the route may have been too easy as you should feel buried at the end of the ride questioning your life decisions to attend. We’ll make up for that next week.

Egan 2024.14 - Top Performers

Thank you for all of you who signed up to volunteer at the Alto Velo Pescadero Road Race this Saturday. It’s great to see the cycling community come together to promote the sport throughout the region. This is our one ask for the year and Thank You to those who answered the request! Now on to the top performers results for the ride:

We are in peak season and the ride will likely get shorter from here, what a bummer! But that didn’t stop 80 riders from showing up this week for the 27 mile route racking up 3,323 ft of elevation gain. Great job everyone, especially Steph Hart who nabbed 5 top 10s, PRs on all 9 segments and claimed Rider of the Day status. Great job Steph! Jen Tavé and Matthew . are the two GC leaders for the week.

Egan Ride 2024.05 — Let’s get Moody

For the fifth episode of Egan, we will revisit a few familiar hills and then move on to some Egan classics - we’ll tackle the unrelenting steepness of Moody for the first time this year, followed by some steep segments off Page Mill.

Robin will lead a women’s group this week with secret intel on all the segments and a very chill pace in between. If you can make it up Moody twice without stopping and are comfortable riding with others, you can keep up with this group! Please bring lights and a layer for the ride home as we will finish around sunset.

Egan 2023.26 - The Season Finale (Egan Women meet at 5:40pm)

Weep ye bitter tears, for the season of Eganing is coming to an end. This Tuesday we will be riding the traditional First and Last Route with Jerome’s favorite pop singer addition (Madonna!). It’s short, but that just means you can go harder on each segment; we expect to see many PRs and cups, and hopefully a few crowns. Your efforts could be rewarded with some tasty treats at the end, but only if you go full gas and have something crazy on you (like a panda helmet) or your bike (pink tassels)!

We got off to an early start this week and it was a smooth operation throughout the ride. According to the Egan Strava club we only had 28 riders and 88 PRs. Something is not adding up here.

Adam Seeger took the rider of the day with PRs on all 10 segments. Yvonne Yip claimed the women’s GC while Hannon Ayer took the men’s GC from the B group (Sandbagger!). Tanner DeVoe finally gets the 2nd place sticker award. Leslie DeBoer gets the sticker on the women’s side.

Egan 2023.23 - Top Performers

A perfect follow-up to last week’s sprint route, it was endurance night with 8 longer segments and only one of them under a minute. That didn’t stop 78 riders from racking up 281 PRs on the ride.

Newcomer Clark Penado was the rider of the day with PRs on all 8 segments. B Ride leader Louise made a rare appearance and rode away with the women’s GC crown. Greg McCullough nabbed the men’s GC nudging out George Wehner who gets the sticker award.

Egan 2023.10 Top Performers

Another epic ride for the record books! Last night’s route is a must-do every year to test everyone’s mid-season strength, endurance and mental sanity. This year was no exception as we survived the infamous stairway to heaven the top of Vista Verde!

Egan 2023.04 Top Performers

Another chilly night, but that didn’t stop us from heating up the streets of Los Altos Hills! Did anyone catch the chatter we raised among the NextDoor oligarchs of Los Altos Hills? It’s a bit entertaining IMO.

This week, we split the group between ‘GC Achievers’ and ‘GC Believers.’ That seemed to go incident free, made regroups easier, and helped the overall ride operate more efficiently. A few notable observations include the front group could have benefited from a few more riders and the follow group could have kept to the right more to allow traffic (and riders) to pass freely on the left. We’ll keep tweaking the grouping structure and try new ideas as we go along. Your feedback on this matter is welcome and appreciated!

C Zinger was rider of the day with PRs on all 9 segments and claimed the men’s GC, while Karen Brems (in the follow group) snagged the women’s general classification. Julian Amblard also deserves recognition as the 3rd fastest overall and the fastest in the follow group. Awesome job folks!

Egan Ride 2023.04 — A little bit longer, a little bit steeper, a little bit harder, a little bit Country!

Egan Riders,

For the 4th episode of the season we’ll add one more segment to last week’s total making this one a little bit longer, a little bit steeper and a little bit harder as we ride up a little bit Country before hitting my three favorite segments near the PA Hills golf and country club.

Spring season is in full bloom and with all the local schools in session we are at peak attendance for the ride. Make sure to arrive early this week as we’ll make important announcements for splitting the ride between ‘GC Achievers’ and ‘GC Believers.’ If you’ve been in the top 20 GC category this season or you can easily post an OLH sub-20 today (not last season and not your best PR effort from years ago) then you’ll want to be in the GC Achievers group leaving earlier than the GC Believers group.

Egan Ride 2023.02 — The Egan Official Launch is this Tuesday, April 4th at 6pm!

At last, the weather forecast looks clear for Tuesday! We will ride as usual starting at 6pm from the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. We are starting this season with an environmental/sustainable/green (ESG) theme using recycled routes from last year in about the same order. 2023.02 was designed by Greg Finley who will be missed as part of the Egan Leadership Team this year. We’ll give this approach a try and see how it goes.

As this is the first official Egan launch, plan on joining us for pizza and libations after the ride at State of Mind at 101 North Plaza in the Los Altos Village.

Egan 2022.26 Top Performers

This week we caught the tail end of the heat wave. Temperature at the start of the ride was 100F, but quickly dropped below 90F by the end of the ride. We were fortunate enough to be in the shadows of the sunset for most of the ride as the segments got longer/steeper as the ride went on. Thanks to Rhodes for calling out the water spout at the top of Magdalena. It was a well deserved rest stop before AND after Blandor Olive Tree.

Rider of the Day was Whitman Kwok with 10 PRs out of 10 Segments. Apparently he was the only one who kept his head ‘cool’ throughout the ride with his 3D printed KAV helmet. Congrats all!

Egan 2022.20 Top Performers & Rider Safety

The last crash we had on the Egan ride was in 2019 when the same rider went down twice. Last night we had two riders go down and left the ride early. As a reminder the principles of the Egan ride are very simple: go hard on the climbs, go easy on the descents and follow group ride protocols. If you are unsafe and put others in danger we’ll either ask that you stay at the back of the ride or leave the ride entirely. It’s our goal to provide a safe and friendly ride, so the last thing we want to do is ask someone to leave it. Now with that out of the way on to the ride summary.

I once heard The Godfather of the Egan ride say “It’s not the length of the climb it’s the Gerth that gets you.” That’s probably the best way to describe last nights follow up to Napolean’s anger management ride where Jerome kept extending the ride until we were all defeated. Over 22 short miles we were able to rack up over 3k feet of elevation gain and still finish before 8pm. It wasn’t the length of the ride, it was definitely the Gerth!

Alex Obrand was rider of the day with 1 QOM, 9 PRs and 7 top 10s.

This week we have a special route that was inspired by James Nicol. He called his signature route “progressions" as each segment is a little longer/steeper/harsher than the last. Since he has moved down under and they do mostly everything the opposite as here, we thought we’d do his signature route in reverse form. The theme for the night is progressive regressive intervals, mostly shortening as the night progresses. None of this progression nonsense James seems to like ;-)
