We charge steep uphills and banter during recovery. Each week is a new route featuring challenging short climbs in the beautiful hills of Silicon Valley.

Start: Tuesdays 6:00pm during daylight saving time at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce, rolling at 6:05pm
Pace: Charge the hills, slow roll in between
Regroups: We regroup and recover after every climb; if you can climb Old La Honda in 25 minutes you should have no problem keeping up
Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2874856572963175602 (click here to see more)
The Egan Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.
Note: During the Egan off season, The Climbing Ride is held monthly on Sundays, starting at 9am at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. Slightly longer than Egan, it features crazy steep hills in places like Los Gatos, Emerald Hills, and Hillsborough. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "If you are going up hill, keep going".

Egan 2024.09 - Top Performers
Scott W was rider of the day with PRs on all 12 segments and a top 10 on Aric Lane. Rachel Hwang took top honors for the women with 2 QOMs, while Grant Miller got the top spot for the men, beating Yann by 1 second. Aric Lane served up some serious results for the sprinters, so you all owe me a big Thank You for including it in the route.
Another reminder that safety is our priority and there are no PRs on downhills! Let’s take it easy on the way home and pay special attention to your speed, surroundings and road hazards. Hitting a bump with speed hurts! Now on with the results…
What a wonderful way to spend a Tuesday evening! This week we kept the ride local, but added a few more segments to get us to 2,581 ft. of climbing. We had a total of 85 riders on the leaderboards (and probably many more who skipped some segments or kept their rides private).

Yann . was rider of the day with PRs on all 7 segments and 3 top 10s. Robin Betz took top honors for the women while Matthew . got the top spot for the men, beating Yann by 25 seconds. There were also 2 QOMs: Gina Yuan on Liddicoat+Stanford and Robin on Golden Oak Sausal to Top.
As always, Golden Oak Egan is popular because who doesn’t love climbing both sides of that monster? We had a total of 84 riders on the leaderboards (and probably many more who skipped some segments or kept their rides private). A surprising number of people decided to ride the gravel through Arastradero back to Los Altos…perhaps we can call this the first “Dirty” Egan?
Once again, big thanks to Christophe Testi for another photoshoot from the top of Golden Oak. You can find his latest photos here and leave a review here. As a reminder, the AV Photo Contest will be running through July 4.

Continuing in both of their leaderboard domination, Jen Tavé was rider of the day and women’s GC leader with 8 PRs, 5 top 10s and 3 (!) QOMs while top GC honors for the men went to Matthew.
Can you believe that we’re already a quarter of the way through our Egan season? Good thing we checked off some neighborhood climbs last night to prepare us for the upcoming longer days and longer rides through the summer.
Approaching the summer also means that attendance will continue to grow so we ask everyone to be extra thoughtful about riding safely and predictably. As a reminder, aero bars are not permitted so please remove them before the start of the ride.
Getting into the fun stuff: shoutout to Christophe Testi for another glamorous photoshoot! You can find the latest photos here and leave a review here. As a reminder, the AV Photo Contest will be running through July 4.

Rachel Hwang was rider of the day with PRs on all 9 segments, 5 top 10s and 3 QOMs (Hilltop Dr, Camino Hermosa and Oxford Dr)! And for the 4th week in a row she took top GC honors…can anyone stop her winning streak? For the men, top GC honors went to Matthew . Steven Wu had KOMs on Mora Glen Dr and Highlands Circle.
Simon says more heat and sweet pizza. Simon says I want Mora Egan. What Simon says, we oblige and Egan riders were out in force this week nearing triple digits again! With Tanner out again Group A was left in the hands of Mike and Jerome, a great opportunity to beat the blue jerseys up the hill! Balance in the two groups improved and we’ll continue to focus on balancing the groups the rest of the season.

Egan 2024.03 - Top Performers
Rachel Hwang was rider of the day with PR’s on all 8 segments (with 7 top 10s!) while also finishing at the top of the women’s GC! Men’s top GC honors went to Matthew . who also PR’ed on all segments!
Another Egan in the books! This week we had another huge turnout with estimates of 110 riders split between two groups. Of those, 80 riders landed on the result leader-boards! There are reports of many sandbaggers in the B group, some more conspicuous than others. You and your friends should consider riding in the A group next time. There’s some extra benefits to riding A such as mentorship from AVRT for riders interested in the world of racing.
This week we also have a few reminders to ensure a safe and fun ride for all! First and foremost is safety, particularly staying in our lane of travel whether there is a center line or not. Riders being passed should stay to the right to make way for a rider hunting that one segment, that ticket to the leader-boards. On the other hand, passing riders should ride predictably and stay on the right-hand side of the road, even if blocked (hey, free excuses). As you pass, keep in mind that there are many levels of bike handling ability within the bunch.
To help with this, next week we will be dividing the group evenly before leaving, so expect some shuffling and possibly some light heckling.

Matin Massoudi was rider of the day with PRs on all 7 segments and a top 2 finish in the GC. For the women, top GC honors went to Rachel Hwang and to Yurko M for the men.
The second Egan of the year was popular, with over 100 riders crowding the prosperous streets and cul-de-sacs of Los Altos Hills. We don’t really have an exact count because some folks prefer to keep their Strava activities private, some might have skipped segments, and some might have had GPS drift errors…but according to results 87 people made it onto the leaderboards by completing all segments!

Egan 2024.01 - Top Performers
In his Egan debut, Matthew took the rider of the day with PRs on all 7 segments. Rachel Huang claimed the women’s GC while Jack Liu - thanks to his backpack full of helium - took the men’s GC.
We have liftoff! Starting things off on the right pedal, we had 98 riders racking up 280 PRs. What a crowd! Not wanting Chloe to miss out on the suffering fun, the B-group kindly waited before launching off. Dirk humbled the A-group by showing what it means to leave it all on the road.

Egan 2023.25 & 26 Top Performers
Rider of the day was Rachel Hwang with PRs on all 7 segments and top placement in the women’s GC. Gavin Hlady took top honors for the men.
The 2023 Egan finalé had 114 riders, some dressed in costume, racking up 365 PRs and respirating under smoky atmospheric conditions with AQI in the mid-100s. While the ride was short, it had a sweet ending with ice cream and popsicles served at the top of Madonna Way, thanks to Gina Yuan and Sue-Lin Holt!

Due to a technical glitch that messed up the results for Egan 2023.25 (more about that below), the results now include all riders, not just those who are in the Egan Strava club. Going forward, we’ll probably calculate the results in this way.

A perfect follow-up to last week’s sprint route, it was endurance night with 8 longer segments and only one of them under a minute. That didn’t stop 78 riders from racking up 281 PRs on the ride.

Egan 2023.22 - Top Performers
Gina Yuan was the rider of the day with 10 PRs, 6 Top 10s, 2 QOMs and top GC honors (just ahead of Robin). Gavin led the men’s GC behind Yann who was taking a nap on the Stirrup Wall. Hannon finished 3rd because he could not find his front derailleur since we cut off his cable.
It was a puncheur’s night with over 79 riders, 489 PRs and 4 KOM/QOMs. There is no doubt that Egan is the most popular ride in the Bay Area! Why is Egan so popular? Egan is not a structured workout nor a café ride. I came to the conclusion that Egan is a ”show on two wheels” where both racers and weekend riders join to defy gravity at sunset.
Yesterday’s BIG ring show was super fun with 12 short segments (with KOMs less than 1 minute except one). Simon had so much fun that he repeated the Boronda View Sprint twice (see video below).

Excellent performance from Zach and Tanner at URR 2023. Tanner is a diesel engine that cannot be stopped once launched.
Simon’s leadout on the Boronda View Sprint. 2nd round. Egan leaders having fun. Tanner deserves all the credit since he did the entire 15 laps of URR 2023 on Sunday.
Egan 2023.21 - Top Performers
Rider of the day was Salvatore T. (for the second week in a row!) with PRs on all 9 segments. Gina Yuan took the woman’s GC with a commanding lead and Hannon Ayer took top spot for the men. And congrats to the all the riders who collectively garnered 362 PRs.
Egan 2023.21 had something for everyone — short steep climbs, long steep climbs and a few “easy” climbs. There were reports of much suffering on the Blandor/Olive Tree segment. Isn’t that the whole point of Egan? For those of you who didn’t suffer on that aforementioned climb, you weren’t trying hard enough 😀

Rider of the day was Salvatore T. with PRs on all 12 segments! An additional shoutout for Greg McCullough for snatching up a KOM on the short (at least for Greg) but steep Baker Lane.
Another Egan down in the books! While relatively tame on paper, this ride sure delivered. The alternating long and short segments catered to climbers and sprinters alike and led to a surprisingly densely packed leaderboard. Rider of the day was Salvatore T. with PRs on all 12 segments! Rider of the day was Alex Obrand with PRs on all 10 segments, 4 Top 10’s and 3 QOMs (both Ravensbury segments as well as Emeraldhill Lane)! An additional shoutout to Gavin Hlady for snatching up the coveted KOM on Altamont with the help of an impressive lead out from the field.
We had yet another successful Egan in the hills of Los Altos Hills (isn’t that redundant?) with 3 separate groups: the women led by Robin Betz, a faster A group led by Tanner DeVoe, and an almost-as-fast B group led by Jerome and Akin.
This week’s results omit a couple of segments: “Mora Glen Drive climb maximus” and “Black Mtn Rd”. The first of these segments was skipped by Robin’s group due to a GPS routing error, and the second one was skipped by the B group because it was getting late. Kudos to anyone who may have gotten a KOM/QOM or Top 10 on these segments, but we’re sorry it doesn’t count towards the overall GC.

Egan 2023.18 - Top Performers
Rider of the day was Daniel Blake with PRs on all 9 segments and a Top 10 on the “Alpine hill repeats” segment.
What a night! We had 62 riders, 281 PRs, and 3 KOMs on De Bell, St Francis (Greg McCullough) and Willowbrook (Gavin Hlady). “La Punition” was well deserved and we had a lot of fun with over 1060 meters of climbing Westridge, Wayside, Joaquin and Vista Verde. Congrats again to Gavin Hlady (P123) and Zach Berger (Open Novice) on the victory at the Pescadero Road Race. Thank you to all the Pescadero Race volunteers! Egan 2023.17 Top Performers on and off the bike!
Robin Betz was women’s rider of the day with PRs on 8/9 hills, while Gavin Hlady was the men’s rider of the day with PRs on all 9 segments.
We had an excellent evening climbing the lesser traveled hills of Westridge! There was quite the turnout, prompting a split into A and B groups once again. Whether it was due to the mild temperature, fierce competition, or the impeccable route planning, there was a huge shift in XOM leader boards on Tuesday. Robin Betz was the first up every hill in the women’s category, capturing an amazing 8/9 PRs, 5 top 10s, and 2 Egan club QOMs! Gavin Hlady didn’t sweep every climb but certainly raked in the trophies including 9/9 PRs, 6 top 10s and 2 Egan club KOMs! Kudos to a number of other riders who also managed an impressive 8 or 9 PRs. Robin Betz and Gavin Hlady were GC top performers for their respective categories.

Sonia Martin was women’s rider of the day with PRs on 9/10 hills, while James Biddle was the men’s rider of the day with PRs on all 10 segments.
Another tour of some classic Egan climbs: complete! Kicking off the ride, we had a great showing for the women’s ride with 11 riders turning out despite the heat. Karen Brems beat the group up every single hill, while Sonia Martin was rider of the day with PRs on 9/10 hills! Following just behind, the A and B groups combined for the evening which perhaps provided some extra competition to break not just one but two XOMs! Congrats to Grant Miller and Greg McCullough for tying on the Esperanza KOM and Greg pulling in a second KOM on Bandera. Rider of the day was James Biddle with PRs on all 10 segments! Kudos to the several other riders who also managed a perfect 10 PRs.

Rider of the day was Colin Ovens with PRs on all 11 segments, a top 10, and 2nd place in the GC. The GC award this week goes to Matt Bierbaum (reports of results tampering are greatly exaggerated) while there were no women riders registered.
A smaller but hardy group joined the official Unofficial Thursday night Egan, allowing us to keep one combined field as we navigated twice up mighty Blandor. The pointy end of the ride was closely contested most of the night until Gabriel Lipkowitz gave an explosive performance on the second trip up Blandor, capturing a top 10.

Egan 2023.09 Top Performers
Rider of the day was Ari Pascarella, with PRs on all 11 segments and a QOM on “Deerfield Drive up”! Ari also took the women’s GC while Eugene Chan took the men’s GC.
Ok, so that was probably the craziest Egan in history. First, let’s talk about the positives:
most # of women riders (13, judging from Robin’s picture)
most # of groups (3)
highest rider count (at least 91, according to the results app, which is an underestimate)
most # of PRs (at least 485, according to the results app)
zero crashes and injuries
zero NextDoor threads
With the growing popularity of Egan, the collective will meet tomorrow to discuss a revised format for the ride. Our objectives are simple:
Make a safe and fun ride for all levels
Accommodate our growth
Promote women’s cycling
Stay tuned for more info soon.

2023.8 Top Performers
Julien Amblard was rider of the day with PRs on all 9 segments and 2 top 10s! Gina Yuan got 8 PRs and took the top spot in the women’s GC. Jack Liu snagged the men’s GC. We had a total of 439 PRs!
It was a tough Tuesday and the pain factor increased 2x by climbing some of the most challenging Egan segments. Who will forget climbing Golden Oak at sunset blinded by the last sun rays of the day and gasping for air? But the best was waiting for us at the top of John Marthens Lane….
Egan by the numbers:
72 ice creams: gone!
48 Gatorades: gone!
40 bottles of water: gone!
1 surprise birthday party for Akin: done! (see video below)
Egan volunteer of the day: Simon Parton, who stored all the drinks and ice creams in his fridge few days earlier. Then he cut the ride short to bring all the above to the top of John Marthens Lane. Give kudos to Simon next time you see him on a ride. Great guy that embodies the true Egan spirit!
For all of you who are not members of Alto Velo and regularly attend the Egan ride, we invite and welcome you to join AV as reciprocal appreciation for all the hard work that the club does to organize these rides.
